Chemotaxonomic responses of autotrophic periphyton communities to nutrient additions in pools of an intermittent stream

چکیده
The algal groups present in periphyton communities form an important base of autochthonous food webs freshwater streams. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are key macronutrients aquatic systems. Excess nutrients benefit some over others. We paired a nutrient-diffusing substrata limitation experiment with high performance liquid chromatography to (a) identify which nutrient(s) limit production, (b) how the biomass community structure changes between isolated pools differing hydrological characteristics along intermittent dryland stream. Unique peaks for 21 pigments were identified matched published values. then produced PERMANOVA model using pigment ratios CHEMTAX analysis explore resulting from nutrient addition. Periphyton these co-limited by N P. additions caused shift diatom- chlorophyte-dominated benefited cyanophyta growth. Phosphorus reduced relative proportion diatoms also resulted increase pheophoribide-a, indicative cell lysis, demonstrating detrimental impact P additions. Outcomes this study show that when adding system there may be subtle shifts composition can telescoped up web regardless system's status.

Photosynthesis-light relations of stream periphyton communities
The photosynthesis-irradiance (P-Z) relationship was examined in 10 intact periphyton communities from sites in eight streams that differed in ambient light, nutrient concentrations, and grazing pressure. Algal biomass ranged from 2.3 to 86 pg Chl a cm -* and taxonomic composition differed. Photoassimilation of 14C was measured in the laboratory at six light levels for each community. Photosynt...
متن کاملConsistency and sensitivity of stream periphyton community structural and functional responses to nutrient enrichment.
Eutrophication remains one of the foremost impacts of industrialization and population expansion on aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Selecting metrics for assessing the manner in which communities and biogeochemical processes respond to nutrient fertilization is an ongoing management challenge critical both for detecting changes and for monitoring recovery of impaired environments. A key limitatio...
متن کاملNitrogen fixation and phosphatase activity in periphyton growing on nutrient diffusing substrata: evidence for differential nutrient limitation in stream periphyton
We explored N2 fixation and alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) in periphyton from a N-limited stream ecosystem by coupling measurements of these processes with nutrient diffusion substrata (NDS) experiments. We measured periphyton biomass accumulation (as ash-free dry mass [AFDM] and chlorophyll a [CHLA]), N2 fixation, and APA to evaluate the relative importance of N2 fixation as an N source t...
متن کاملNutrient additions to mitigate for loss of Pacific salmon: consequences for stream biofilm and nutrient dynamics
Mitigation activities designed to supplement nutrient and organic matter inputs to streams experiencing decline or loss of Pacific salmon typically presuppose that an important pathway by which salmon nutrients are moved to fish (anadromous and/or resident) is via nutrient incorporation by biofilms and subsequent bottom-up stimulation of biofilm production, which is nutrient-limited in many eco...
متن کاملPeriphyton response to longitudinal nutrient depletion in a woodland stream: evidence of upstream-downstream linkage
Longitudinal gradients in streamwater nutrient concentrations in Walker Branch are generated as a result of instream nutrient uptake and spatially confined groundwater inputs during the period from November to May. The response of the stream periphyton community to these longitudinal nutrient reductions was determined by measuring periphyton biomass, productivity, species composition, and phosp...
